Nancy Cookson, Principal at Accrington and Rossendale College for the past six years retires this month and the new campus, replacing the old 1950s buildings will be open by September.
Ms Cookson actually began her Further Education career at the Sandy Lane College in 1975 when she studied evening classes for an initial teacher training qualification.
Following positions in several colleges around the country she returned as Principal in 2001 and will be replaced by Stephen Carlisle, the current Vice Principal.
She said: "It has been a great thrill to lead the college in my hometown through the past six years and to position it for the future. Our full time student numbers have risen by 30% in the last six years and we have enjoyed working with the secondary schools on our patch to support the development of more opportunities for young people in Hyndburn and Rossendale. We have also revolutionised our approach to part time students and now, in addition to traditional day release and evening students, have over 3000 students studying in their workplaces as well as nearly 300 undergraduate students."
Mr Carlisle said: "I am delighted to be given this exciting opportunity, particularly at a time when the colleges new campus is nearing completion. With our new campus ready for September we have a wonderful opportunity to provide 21st Century facilities for the people of our area."
The new senior team will be completed by the appointment of Lynda Mason as the new Deputy Principal.
