Jim Harkness explained why the prestigious CoVE status was awarded; "In recognition of our strong relationships with the furniture industry, we were asked to complete a three year development plan, to show how we could work with furniture employers to increase the number of skilled and qualified employees within the industry. As a result of the plan, we were awarded a CoVE for furniture manufacturing, which is the only one of its kind in the United Kingdom."
Jim continued, "The main benefit of achieving CoVE status for furniture companies is the funding, which has been made available via the Learning and Skills Council (and matched by NLTG). This has allowed NLTG to create and equip two dedicated furniture workshops for the delivery of Woodmachining, Assembly, Polishing & Finishing, Upholstery, and Upholstery Cutting and Sewing qualifications."
Jim explained how the centre will address needs in the local area. "The training school is located within out Bradshawgate Head Office site in Accrington and will be used to address the skills shortages. Research in "Skills Foresight" identifies that within furniture companies there is an ageing workforce, with 35% of employees aged over 45. It also highlights difficulties that furniture companies have recruiting young people. Therefore the furniture workshop will be available to all furniture Apprentices and for upskilling and reskilling of furniture employees aged over 25 who can then progress onto furniture NVQs."
Steve Palmer, executive director of the LSC in Lancashire, added, "Congratulations to the team at NLTG for all their hard work. The new facilities created with CoVE funding will be of benefit to both the Apprentices and to the local community. Well done to all concerned!"
