Welsh Colleges Recognised at fforwm Annual Awards Ceremony

p>The Association of Further Education Colleges in Wales (fforwm) has announced its Annual Awards winners.

The 2006 results were announced at the fforwm annual conference in Llandudno, 8th-9th of June and were sponsored by the Basic Skills Agency, OCR, Edexcel, Tribal, Dysg, City and Guilds and the Institute for Leadership and Management (ILM). In all, seven colleges have been recognised and applauded for their contribution to "the economic, social and cultural fabric of Wales" and for initiating and driving key developments for the benefit of the learner.

Director of Corporate Affairs for fforwm, Dr. Mike Jones, said: "I am delighted for all the successful colleges and indeed all the colleges that were shortlisted. The awards, which are judged by independent panels of experts, recognise the outstanding achievement, highlight the breadth of provision in FE institutions and acknowledge collaboration between institutions and organisations. They are central to fforwm's role in spreading good practise within the sector."

A Record Year

The standard of entries this year is said to have been particularly high, with a record number of applications submitted for the awards. There were seven categories contested in all, covering the wide spectrum of learning and skills services on offer in Welsh further Education.

In the award for e-learning, Coleg Llandrillo came out on top, whilst Gorsienon College was given the award for Innovation. Deeside College was recognised in the Basic Skills category, with Coleg Gwent taking the award for key skills. The University of Glamorgan/Merthyr Tydfil College and Coleg Ceredigion were given the awards for Equality and Diversity and Sustainable Development respectively and the final award, for Vocational Area Curriculum Initiative, went to Coleg Glan Hafren.

Following the ceremony, guests were entertained by students from three different Welsh colleges. Speaking of the performers, Dr Jones said: "fforwm is proud to be able to showcase the talents of performing arts college students. The students" passion and enthusiasm is a credit to them and their colleges. The entertainment provided by Coleg Harlech, Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor and Coleg Llandrillo showed FE at its very best."
