Trafalgar Square provided Harlow College with inspiration today to celebrate this year's Colleges Week.

Students took turns to stand and perform on a plinth in Harlow's indoor shopping centre, the Harvey Centre, in honour of the fourth plinth 100-day art project that came to an end last month.

NCTJ journalism student Chandni Tanna came up with the idea, which also helped raise nearly 500 pounds for the BBC's Children in Need.

The event saw students demonstrating Harlow College's massive range of courses and opportunities, from hairdressing to catering.

"Harlow College is at the heart of its community and this is an opportunity to showcase the range of talent that exists among our students," said principal Colin Hindmarch.

The college has already enrolled 13 per cent more students than last academic year, as it experiences record numbers of people intending to apply. Last week's open evening also attracted 100 more families than last year.

Mr Hindmarch said: "It's true that our student numbers are growing and we realise that some of this increase is due, in part to the Credit Crunch, however, some of the feedback from parents is that it's our focused teaching and learning strategy that's making us first choice.

"I'd like to thank the Harvey Centre for their support and of course our students and staff for giving up their time to help raise money for Children in Need."
