Geoff Hall, a former principal of New College Nottingham, has been awarded a Knighthood in the New Year Honours List 2012.

OBEs were awarded to Derby College principal David Croll, West Herts College principal Elizabeth Rushton, Hartpury College principal Malcolm Wharton, and Richard Chambers, a recently retired principal of Lambeth College.

Lynne Sedgmore, executive director of the 157 Group of 27 influential colleges, said: "On behalf of the 157 Group I would like to wholeheartedly congratulate these outstanding principals rightly acknowledged by the government for their contributions to further education and skills.

"The Orders reflect the passion and commitment of the recipients in championing learning and reinforce the significance that further education powerfully contributes to overall communities. I would also like to congratulate all other further education staff that have been recognised this year."

Marilyn Hawkins, principal of Barnet and Southgate College and chair of the 157 Group, added:"We are delighted that the hard work and efforts of staff in this sector have been recognised. As peers I have worked with in the 157 Group, I would personally like to thank Geoff, Richard and David for their invaluable contributions, commitment and hard work in this sector. This is a fantastic start to the New Year for the 157 Group members and the sector as a whole."
