Thirteen cultural and community-based groups have today been awarded a share of £500,000 to boost the creative skills and employability of Londoners in the run up to the 2012 Olympic Games.

The London Development Agency's 2012 London Cultural Skills Fund, managed by Arts Council England, was set up to support the diverse range of art and skills organisations in the capital. Some offer courses specifically tailored to help young people who are not in employment, education or training (NEET).

"London's creative industries are one of our most important economic sectors. The 2012 London Cultural Skills Fund will help hundreds of Londoners improve their creative skills and put them in a better position to take up job opportunities in one of London's most vibrant sectors," said Peter Rogers, chief executive of the London Development Agency.

The fund has already helped hundreds of Londoners improve their employment prospects in the creative industries, and today marks the third and final round of the successful £1.2 million scheme.

London Mayor Boris Johnson said: "As we approach the 2012 Games, skilled and talented people will be key to London retaining its status at the forefront of creativity. The 2012 London Cultural Skills Fund is one of many schemes we have put in place to increase opportunities for Londoners and ensure the capital comes out of the downturn equipped for future success."
