LSIS developing guidance for new teaching qualifications

LSIS has begun developing guidance for three generic initial teacher training qualifications after publishing the second phase of a far-reaching review.

The new qualifications will include a specialist route at Level 5 for those teaching English, mathematics and disabled learners, a Level 3 Award in Education and Training, a Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training, and a Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training.

They will be developed using the findings of its review of teacher and training qualifications, which summarises more than 350 responses from members of the FE and Skills sector.

Liz Walters, head of qualifications and skills at LSIS, said: “We were encouraged by the number of responses received from all parts of the sector, and impressed by the thoughtfulness with which respondents have engaged with our proposals. With so many professionals across the FE and learning sector involved in the development of these qualifications, we are confident that they are truly sector designed and led.”

LSIS chief executive Rob Wye said: “This review has provided a real opportunity to work with the sector and members of the FE Guild for the benefit of FE teachers and trainers to develop qualifications that will meet the needs of employers and trainee teachers, and ultimately learners by supporting outstanding teaching and learning”.
