From education to employment

McDonald’s adds degrees to education portfolio

Fast food chain McDonald’s has launched a foundation degree as the company seeks to become a major provider of HE and FE.

The fast-food conglomerate has joined up with Manchester Metropolitan University to adapt the company’s management development programme for staff to improve productivity, efficiency and staff confidence.

Last year, McDonald’s revealed its plan to become the largest Apprenticeship provider in the UK, offering places for 10,000 apprentices every year.

The company has released a prospectus to outline the wide range of courses on offer. The catalogue will be readily available in career advice centres across the UK amongst the brochures from traditional academic institutions.

The Foundation degree, which is accredited by MMU, begins this month with 53 restaurant managers signing up to the scheme. The qualification aims to satisfy both the need of businesses and academic vigour.

David Fairhurst, chief people officer at McDonald’s, said: “We provide a learning ladder that our people can ascend while they work. There’s no longer a need to choose between education and employment.”
