From education to employment

Thames Valley employers rank skills above qualifications

Thames Valley businesses rank skills, experience and behaviour higher than qualifications, according to new research.

A study of around 80 companies from the region found 28 per cent placed skills above qualifications, which reached 15 per cent.

Experience was next highest at 26 per cent, followed by behaviour at 23 per cent.

The same report carried out in 2014 found 38 per cent considered qualifications as most important, according to Parkside Recruitment, Activate Learning and C8 Consulting, which commissioned the online survey.

Sally Dicketts, group chief executive, Activate Learning, said: “The results of this survey highlight the vital importance of educators and employers working together to develop work-ready young people who combine high-level technical skills with the right attitudes and behaviours.

“We have structured our own schools and colleges to ensure we have this outward focus. We are building strong relationships with businesses in key industries to ensure that our students have a direct line of sight to meaningful employment.”
