The RT Hon John Denham MP took part in a celebratory event at the College's Booth Lane site where existing buildings will be demolished and replaced with a 27,000m² modern design. Construction for a substantial extension at Lower Mounts in the Town Centre will also begin.

John Denham also met some of the College’s Apprentices and learners in the catering training kitchens during his visit.

He said, "I'm very grateful to Sally Keeble for inviting me to Northampton College. I have been very impressed with the College and their exciting plans to transform the facilities here. The students I met during the visit talked confidentially about their courses and learning which is exactly what I look for in a college."

Len Closs, Principal said, "This special ceremony marks the start of one the most exciting periods in the College’s 36 year history. We are thrilled that the importance of our ambitious plans has been recognised by the Minister. These buildings will enable us to provide unparalleled educational facilities of the highest quality. They will become major assets which the College will deploy to deliver a further education service of which Northampton and its people can be proud."

Catering learner Sophie Eves, 17 from Rushden was one of the students to meet John Denham. She said, "I was excited and nervous about meeting him. He was really nice and took a real interest in my course which was great."
