#ResultsDay - Celebrating Real Success

The students getting their results this week deserve a huge amount of respect and congratulations having come through a very difficult two years of their education and training.  They have faced tremendous disruption and uncertainty, yet they have continued to learn in new and in many cases very difficult ways.  Despite this the headlines in the media are all about grade inflation and the problems universities and employers will face.  Even the term grade inflation is unhelpful.

Funding specialist Stewart Segal discusses new Employer Funding Pilot

FE News chats with FE funding specialist Stewart Segal about the new £250 million Employer Funding Pilot in the second installment of our funding series. Stewart discusses the challenges and opportunities that this pilot provides to the sector. One of them being to enable providers to work more closely with employers to deliver programmes that suit their business needs.Click on the video below to hear what he has to say:

Apprenticeship Standards and Qualifications – IfA ‘Rules’

The Institute for Apprenticeships (IfA) has recently widened its definition of when it will allow mandatory qualifications to be part of a new apprenticeship standard.  This comes after a lot of pressure from employers who had proposed mandatory qualifications but were ‘turned down’ by the IfA and the Government before them.  The clause that has now been included in the guidance is that a mandatory qualification can be included;

The impact of the current lockdown on apprentices

You never know building a system based on trust may just be the way forward.  No one could have predicted during the first lockdown in March last year that 10 months later we would have the highest number of people in hospital with Covid ever and the Secretary of State for Health saying that this is the ‘worst moment of the pandemic’.Despite the terrible figures and the personal stories we all have of this terrible epidemic we can look forward to a time when the inoculation programme starts to have an impact on the levels of infections, illness and deaths.

The Spending Review and its impact on young people

One of the few things that everyone has agreed on during the pandemic is that it will take a heavy toll on jobs and that those who will be most affected will be those who have disadvantages in the job market be that a lack of skills and experience and those that have physical or mental barriers. It is therefore a relief that one of the Chancellors big priorities in the spending review is protecting and creating jobs.

My lessons learned: Euroskills 2018

Last week I had the great privilege to see the Euroskills 2018 Competition in Budapest. These national and international skills competitions are always very inspiring as you see first-hand the commitment and skill of these talented young people and the support they are given by their coaches and experts.

Is it just the off-the-job rules affecting apprenticeship starts?

I had a number of responses from my FE News article last week on the 20% off the job training (OTJT) rules.  Many agreed that in most cases the 20% OTJT can be managed by providers as long as the ESFA enables providers to interpret the rules to ensure that it benefits apprentices and employers and is not just another audit process.

Managing the 20% Off-the-Job Training Rules #OTJT

At the AELP National Conference, it was confirmed by the AELP member survey and the response to a question on the day that the rules around the requirement to deliver at least 20% of working hours as off-the-job training (OTJT) for the duration of an apprenticeship remains one of the main barriers to take up by employers.

Changing the Culture of Education - Post 18 Review

The Prime Minister’s speech on 19th February 2018 was a positive step towards the development of an effective education and training system.  She set out the main aim of changing “outdated attitudes” and “false boundaries” in the system.

Working towards an Effective Apprenticeship Levy Implementation by Stewart Segal

When 3aaa established a team earlier this year to initiate discussions with employers who will be paying the Apprenticeship Levy from April 2017, we thought we might have been a little bit early in the cycle.  In fact employers have welcomed the discussions around how the Levy will affect them and more importantly how they can use the introduction of the Levy to review their whole workforce development approach and to see how apprenticeships fit within that.  What is also clear is that many employers have old fashioned perceptions of Apprenticeships, many still feel that they are only for young people and only for new recruits.  Others do not realise that there is an Apprenticeship for every type of workplace skill right through to senior management levels.

We thought it would be helpful to explain how we tier our latest education news content and how you can get involved and understand how you can read the latest daily Further Education news and how we structure our FE Week of content:

Main Features

Our main features are exclusive and are thought leadership articles and blue sky thinking with experts writing peer to peer news articles about the future of education and the future of work. The focus is solution led thought leadership, sharing best practice, innovation and emerging strategy. These are often articles about the future of education and the future of work, they often then create future education news articles. We limit our main features to a maximum of 20 per week, as they are often about new concepts and new thought processes. Our main features are also exclusive articles responding to the latest education news, maybe an insight from an expert into a policy announcement or response to an education think tank report or a white paper.

FE Voices

FE Voices was originally set up as a section on FE News to give a voice back to the sector. As we now have over 3,000 newsrooms and contributors, FE Voices are usually thought leadership articles, they don’t necessarily have to be exclusive, but usually are, they are slightly shorter than Main Features. FE Voices can include more mixed media with the Further Education News articles, such as embedded podcasts and videos. Our sector response articles asking for different comments and opinions to education policy announcements or responding to a report of white paper are usually held in the FE Voices section. If we have a live podcast in an evening or a radio show such as SkillsWorldLive radio show, the next morning we place the FE podcast recording in the FE Voices section.

Sector News

In sector news we have a blend of content from Press Releases, education resources, reports, education research, white papers from a range of contributors. We have a lot of positive education news articles from colleges, awarding organisations and Apprenticeship Training Providers, press releases from DfE to Think Tanks giving the overview of a report, through to helpful resources to help you with delivering education strategies to your learners and students.

We have a range of education podcasts on FE News, from hour long full production FE podcasts such as SkillsWorldLive in conjunction with the Federation of Awarding Bodies, to weekly podcasts from experts and thought leaders, providing advice and guidance to leaders. FE News also record podcasts at conferences and events, giving you one on one podcasts with education and skills experts on the latest strategies and developments.

We have over 150 education podcasts on FE News, ranging from EdTech podcasts with experts discussing Education 4.0 and how technology is complimenting and transforming education, to podcasts with experts discussing education research, the future of work, how to develop skills systems for jobs of the future to interviews with the Apprenticeship and Skills Minister.

We record our own exclusive FE News podcasts, work in conjunction with sector partners such as FAB to create weekly podcasts and daily education podcasts, through to working with sector leaders creating exclusive education news podcasts.

Education Video Interviews

FE News have over 700 FE Video interviews and have been recording education video interviews with experts for over 12 years. These are usually vox pop video interviews with experts across education and work, discussing blue sky thinking ideas and views about the future of education and work.

FE News has a free events calendar to check out the latest conferences, webinars and events to keep up to date with the latest education news and strategies.

FE Newsrooms

The FE Newsroom is home to your content if you are a FE News contributor. It also help the audience develop relationship with either you as an individual or your organisation as they can click through and ‘box set’ consume all of your previous thought leadership articles, latest education news press releases, videos and education podcasts.

Do you want to contribute, share your ideas or vision or share a press release?

If you want to write a thought leadership article, share your ideas and vision for the future of education or the future of work, write a press release sharing the latest education news or contribute to a podcast, first of all you need to set up a FE Newsroom login (which is free): once the team have approved your newsroom (all content, newsrooms are all approved by a member of the FE News team- no robots are used in this process!), you can then start adding content (again all articles, videos and podcasts are all approved by the FE News editorial team before they go live on FE News). As all newsrooms and content are approved by the FE News team, there will be a slight delay on the team being able to review and approve content.
