Last night the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) won the Accountancy Age's Public & Voluntary Report & Accounts Award 2004 for its Annual Report and Accounts 2002-2003.

The award was presented by Rory Bremner, one of Britain's sharpest impressionists, at the Accountancy Age Awards for Excellence at Battersea Park Arena, London. The event was attended by nearly 1000 prominent members of the business community "“ including senior partners and financial directors from some of the largest companies in the UK.

The LSC's Annual Report and Accounts 2002-2003 was shortlisted along with four other organisations, all of who were really strong contenders for this year's award

Jan Davison, National Director of Communications for the Learning and Skills Council, said: "We are absolutely thrilled to have won this prestigious award. The level of competition was extremely impressive.

"The LSC is transforming itself into a new kind of public sector body, one that is known and respected for its responsiveness, clarity of communication and leadership. This award is real recognition of the distance we have travelled in the last year."

Commenting on the LSC's achievement, the judges agreed that the LSC's annual report brought its work to life and made it accessible. "It was good to see the organisation's aims up front" said one. "The indexing made it easy to navigate and the photos brought the report to life."

The panel felt that "the LSC's annual report provides a comprehensive picture of an organisation on the cusp of change, driving through an essential and highly topical programme of reform" in a complex sector. They added that "the LSC had clearly taken to heart previous criticism regarding lack of clarity. The organisation is to be commended on its transparent efforts to improve the quality of its communication."
