    This one day workshop will explore, with a view to fully understand, the requirements for Level 1 and Level 2 Functional English. The content is designed to support staff who are delivering Functional Skills English confidently, in order to further develop their skills and support capacity building for English delivery within their organisation.

    Content will look at:

    • the skill and knowledge requirements for each Level 1 and Level 2 Functional Skills English;
    • understand the impact of phonics learning and knowledge for the spelling requirements within end assessment and develop strategies to support and deliver training;
    • consider how to develop learners towards competence for all 3 units;
    • consider different approaches for developing the required English Skills to Level 2 and beyond;
    • recognise when learners are ready for final assessment with each aspect of Functional Skills English and be able to demonstrate the skills required consistently;
    • understand the challenges and misconceptions that form barriers to learning in English;
    • develop the confidence and competence to support English programme development and delivery and;
    • how to support less confident staff within their organisations.
    • See the Agenda for more information.

    Target Audience

    Tutors/Trainers/Teachers/Practitioners delivering Functional Skills who feel confident with their own Functional Skills English to Level 2 and supporting learners with their development towards successful completion of Functional Skills English end assessment.

    Delegates would typically be employed within organisations that deliver Functional Skills English to Apprentices where vocational delivery teams/staff do not feel confident to support learners with their English development or where capacity for more confident delivery and integration of English into programmes.

    Typically organisations delivering Apprenticeships where English is supported as part of the main programme and capacity with English subject specialists does not fully meet the demand will benefit e.g. Independent Training Providers/Colleges/Employer Providers
