Lesson Observations – Part 2

June 22, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Lesson observations are commonplace, but do they lead to improvements? If we don’t know the answer to this question, should we be doing them?
Apprenticeships are very different to classroom-based education and therefore present particular challenges – and opportunities – when devising a lesson observation scheme.
In this webinar, Steven will look at how lesson observations can be used effectively in apprenticeships to improve quality.
This is the second webinar on this topic following Steven’s earlier examination of some of the principles of effective observations.

Most lesson observation schemes aim to give leaders an insight into the quality of the curriculum and how it is taught, as well as helping them to identify priorities for improvement. However, too frequently, observation schemes for apprenticeships do not differ significantly from those used in other provision types, despite the unique characteristics of apprenticeships.

This webinar will help leaders design observation schemes specific to apprenticeships that consider the curriculum, learning and progress across all elements of the apprenticeship.

Through the webinar you will:

  • Consider the different ways of observing apprenticeship training according to the purpose of the observation;
  • Look at the best ways of:
    • securing reliable evidence of the quality of an apprenticeship
    • improving the quality of the curriculum and training
  • Develop some ideas for refining the observations you carry out in your apprenticeship provision.
