Kainos celebrates five years of CodeCamp
Northern Ireland’s biggest summer coding event for teens returns to Queen’s University Belfast between 24th July and 4th August
Kainos, a leading provider of digital services and platforms, today announces the launch of its fifth summer CodeCamp for students aged 14-18, inviting applications from 3rd May 2017 for places at this popular two-week event. CodeCamp 2017 will be held at the recently-opened Computer Science Building at Queen’s University Belfast, which provides the latest in computing technology and connectivity as well as creative workspaces for up to 1,000 students at a time.

The camp will help students expand their knowledge of computer coding and develop their professional and business skills. CodeCamp will feature tech-based activities such as virtual reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) demonstrations, app development, Raspberry Pi tutorials and breakout talks on a range of programming languages and technologies. Guest speakers will offer career advice and guidance, along with mentoring from Kainos’ professional software engineers. Students will have the chance to win prizes and recognition for their progress and coding capabilities.

Demand for places this year is expected to be greater than ever before, with a wealth of new technology demonstrations, talks and a state-of-the-art venue in place for the two-week summer camp between 24th July and 4th August 2017.  Students will get the chance to experience the latest developments in technology as well as learning basic coding techniques. Applications are open to all students, but particularly those that are interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). This year, Codecamp is moving from a first-come, first-served ticket format to an application process, so that everyone interested can be considered for the places on offer.

“We are really delighted to have this opportunity again to host and support Kainos through CodeCamp. We see this and other outreach activities as helping us to get young people enthused and excited about coding,” said Dr Phil Hanna, director of education at the School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Queen’s University. “Through CodeCamp we have seen many young people take their first step towards computing at school and university, and from there to a rewarding career in the computing sector.”

CodeCamp is part of the Tech Outreach programme at Kainos, which seeks to encourage more students to pursue STEM subjects and careers, as well as boost industry awareness and experience and assist with future work experience placements.  “Inspiring and educating young people about IT and a digital society is essential for their future. That’s why we run events like Kainos CodeCamp,” said Gemma Crothers, tech outreach manager at Kainos. “Like the rest of our Tech Outreach programme, Code Camp provides opportunities for young people to learn valuable IT skills and to improve their digital literacy and widen their career opportunities in the future.”

Applications for places at CodeCamp begin on 3rd May 2017. These will include a 250-word statement on why the student would like to attend and why they will benefit from CodeCamp. Students can apply here.
