From education to employment

Wales unifies FE employment contracts

Employers and trade unions in FE colleges in Wales have agreed to introduce a national contract for staff across the sector in a first for the country.

The move, which has no equivalent in England, will stop contracts of employment from varying from one Welsh college to another.

It comes after four years of negotations and covers support staff, lecturers and managers.

Rebecca Williams, chairwoman of the Further Education Joint Trade Unions, said: “This is a major step forward for employees in the sector.

“We’re confident that the harmonisation of terms and conditions that the contract brings to each staff group will mean a more equitable and transparent settlement for all.
