From education to employment

Christopher Samuel signs up for computer course and wins a prize.

Christopher Samuel, 37, from Treharris, has won a prize for becoming the 10,000th person to sign-up for Learndirect with The College Ystrad Mynach.

He has signed-up for a Computer Course for Beginners at The College @ Bargoed. Now, staff at The College @ Bargoed, are celebrating their success and looking forward to helping even more people learn new skills.

Dean Howells, ILT Manager, said: ?We?re very proud that Christopher has become the 10,000th person to sign-up for Learndirect with The College Ystrad Mynach.

We?ve had a variety of people coming in and signing up for courses ? from using a computer, through to help with literacy and numeracy and business and management.?

Christopher was not brought up with computers and now feels that to get on in both his work and personal life he needs to master the skills!

He said: ?I was made redundant in the spring and felt that to improve my chances in the job market I needed to learn how to use computers. Already I am finding that my skills have developed and I am able to search the internet and email my uncle in Australia!?

Howells added: ?Students enjoy the learning methods and courses available from Learndirect; many students go on to study more than one Learndirect course. Students enjoy coming to the centre to study in a friendly and professional environment and it?s great for us to see the progress they make.

?But we know there are more people who would like to learn new skills and we are here and can help them. I would urge them to drop in, just like Christopher did, and we can show them what?s available and advise them on what to do next.?
