Government publishes new skills strategy

The government has published a new skills strategy as part of plans to make the system more rigorous and responsive to the country’s needs.

The strategy, Rigour and Responsiveness in Skills, outlines a variety of ways it aims to improve the current system, from intervening more to tackle poor provision to the creation of traineeships.

It will also provide for extra capital funding to help ensure colleges have up to date facilities in a range of disciplines that can support economic growth.

Jean Kelly, the Institute for Learning’s (IfL) director of professional development, said: “IfL wholeheartedly supports the view that every learner should expect to receive high-quality training and education and that all colleges and providers should be supported to become outstanding, as many of the best already are.

“The government’s proposed initiatives to raise standards begin with the premise that high-quality teaching and learning is at the core of a successful training system.”
