Technician Council finds first chairman in National Grid’s Steve Holliday

Steve Holliday, chief executive of the National Grid, has been appointed chairman of the government’s new Technician Council.

Mr Holliday will help the national council support the creation of a new technician class in sectors such as engineering, scientific research and manufacturing.

Welcoming the appointment, Business, Innovation and Skills Minister Pat McFadden said it will give employers confidence that the knowledge and abilities of a new generation of skilled technicians have been rigorously assessed.

Mr McFadden said: “The new Technician Council has a vital role to play in bringing together all of those who employ and train technicians to make this happen.

“It will also champion rising standards and promote the immense value of technicians to our economy. I believe that Steve Holliday has the experience and ability to drive this agenda forward.”

The Technician Council will play a key role in facilitating the initial drafting of technician registration standards. It will promote professional status and ensure recognition for the technician class through marketing and policy influence roles.

Mr Holliday commented: “As the chief executive of National Grid I am only too aware of how important technicians are to the success of our business. I am delighted to have been asked to chair the Technician Council. I look forward to working with other key stakeholders to build a framework for a modern class of technician to ensure that this critical role in the workplace is more widely recognised and respected.

“I am particularly keen to ensure that young people have a better understanding of what technicians do and the rewards that training to be one brings them.”
