From education to employment

Apprenticeship and WBL professionals – Where do we go from here?

Karren Culshaw, Quality and Curriculum Expert

We are all painfully aware of the devastating impact Covid-19 has had on the industry.

Many small training providers have already been forced to close and I am sure that there are many more to follow as the pandemic tightens its grip on the country.

The question is – where do we go from here?

I am hearing of hundreds of applications for roles in this industry which are now a good 20% less salary as a result of Covid, if not more in some areas. Furlough has offered little relief, often leading to redundancy.

There are rumbles of big cash injections to boost the economy, but with the best will in the world there is a desperate shortage of jobs in all areas of the sector.

I am sure I am not alone in my frustration of seeking a role where I can really give back utilising the skillset I have worked so hard to develop over the years. There are literally hundreds of applications for roles which were in abundance 12 months ago.

The Health and Social Care sector is under immense pressure and although Apprentices are keen to progress, getting a visit is tougher than ever because the system is at breaking point. The Hospitality industry is on its knees after being one of the hardest hit in light of the Covid pandemic.

Unemployment is rising and we are not doing well compared to other countries. Even France has improved its situation considering unemployment figures where the UK is lagging behind.

There needs to be a massive boost in getting people back into sustainable employment. I am not talking about a lip service approach but some real investment whether it be a AEB injection or otherwise. Something needs to happen, and quickly.

As for those who have been affected by redundancy. I really feel for you. Let us all keep our fingers crossed that the government takes action to avoid a massive skills shortage long term and give our learners the skills, knowledge and behaviours that they duly deserve.

So, my final question once again – where do we go from here?
