From education to employment

EDI’s Gareth Phillips shares some ideas on how to engage employers

Awarding Body EDI’s business development director, Gareth Phillips, discusses engaging employers.

According to Mr Phillips, a recent CBI study found employers in England spent £38 billion each year training and developing their staff, compared to the £4 billion funded through the SFA.

He gives us three ways to engage with employers from an awarding body perspective:

1) Working with in-house company training programmes, endorsing the qualification and offering a Quality Assurance service
2) Placing individual employer training units onto the QCF
3) Working with businesses to transfer their in-company training programme and migrating this over into national qualifications, which would then be eligible for Government funding.

He also explains how colleges can ask for help to engage employers through their awarding body, adding that, in his experience with EDI, they have put together co-branded materials with colleges with employers – even providing a seven point strategy for their clients on how to offer engagement programmes.
