UK Skills CEO calls for individuals to showcase their talents to the world
Simon Bartley, the chief executive of UK Skills, told FE News at the annual AoC conference last week about his search for talented individuals to compete in upcoming WorldSkills and EuroSkills events.
The competitions aim to celebrate learners who have become true masters in their respective fields, with skills ranging from hairdressing to farriery.
Mr Barltey said: “I am here at the AoC conference doing a call for action from colleges across the United kingdom to ask them to participate, even more fully than they do at the moment, in putting forward individuals as potential competitors, from whom we can pick UK teams to represent the whole of the country at both WorldSkills competitions and EuroSkills competitions.”
UK teams from previous competitions have been doing well to show the country’s strength in skills education, and the events are as much a way to champion a provider’s success as sparking individual development through competition.
Mr Bartley continued: “We have just come back from EuroSkills in Rotterdam, where the UK team of 16 individuals participated in a total of six disciplines, and where we came back with eight individual and team gold medals, a silver medal, and where every single one of our competitors achieved or bettered the European Skills benchmark in their disciplines.”
UK Skills has also begun its search for talent to compete in London 2011, when the highly acclaimed WorldSkills “Skills Olympics” are hosted in the UK for the first time. The event, to be held at the Excel Centre, will be the largest competition of its kind.
