Three in five young people from lower income households think their life goals are unachievable

Skills pledges welcome – but funding must follow

More people would prefer their children to learn a trade than go to university

More people (48%) would prefer their child to get a vocational qualification after leaving school instead of attending university (37%) or starting work (8%), @SMFthinktank has found.

It finds that whilst there are considerable opportunities for and benefits to collaboration between colleges and universities, unfair and ineffective competition is doing more harm than good.

Inject at least an extra £1.3 billion a year into adult education to tackle the unemployment crisis

The Social Market Foundation (@SMFthinktank) says that a “disastrous” 50% decline in adult education funding over the last decade has left many low-wage workers poorly prepared for economic change and will hamper the UK economy’s recovery from the crisis.
