Mahara | UK09 – Innovation with e-Portfolios

24h left to secure your early bird ticket

London, UK, Thursday, 25 June 2009:
The first European conference dedicated to Mahara, the leading open source e-Portfolio, will be held at the Institute of Education on July 15, 2009.

ULCC, the first UK Mahara partner, and Catalyst, one of the founders of Mahara, will bring together experts, practitioners and providers of learning and training to share their knowledge and best practise.

E-Portfolios give the learner control over so called artefacts (i.e. essays, images, blogs and hyperlinks to name a few) and allow them to demonstrate and record their achievements over time.

As David Drummond from Catalyst points out “e-Portfolios are rapidly gaining enthusiasm as an educational and CPD tool in Europe and this annual event will serve as a focal point and launching pad for taking utilisation of Mahara to the next level.  With this event we are concentrating not so much on the nitty gritty technology behind Mahara but on the question of what e-Portfolios can bring to education in general and looking at ways in which Mahara can be used effectively to accomplish a more personalised learning focus.”

ULCC’s strategic partnership with Mahara, officially announced at last year’s Moodle Wonderland, (link) comes from their exciting developments with the popular ‘Personalisation of Learning’ framework.   “Since 2006, we have been developing a framework for learning providers to implement personalisation strategies using open source software” says Philip Butler, Senior e-Learning Advisor at ULCC.  “Through partnering with Mahara we are able to be actively involved in placing e-Portfolios at the heart of learning whilst ensuring they will meet the needs of the UK education sector”.

The conference will kick-off with Lisa Grey, JISC Programme Manager discussing what e-Portfolios are good for, followed by David Drummond outlining the upcoming features and developments with the Mahara roadmap. Parallel workshops will cover topics ranging from “Mahara & professional development” to “Implementing e-Portfolios”, “e-Portfolios and presenting student work” and “Mahara and personalisation of learning”.
