Top photographer gives snapshot of career to Cardiff and Vale College students

A top professional photographer came in to Cardiff and Vale College to put students in the picture about a career behind the camera.

Richard Walton has spent 12 years as a freelance photographer, providing studio and location shots for agencies, editorial and corporate clients. He has travelled the world working for clients such as Maxim, MTV, Ottillie Pop and Gumball 3,000.

He visited CAVC’s City Centre Campus to give a talk to learners studying for a Foundation Degree in Photography. Students on the FD Photography course are introduced to a wide range of both digital and traditional equipment and industry standard editing and post production software to develop their skills to a professional level.

Richard spoke about his experiences as a professional photographer and gave advice on how to improve technique and make a living in the industry.

“I’m excited to be here,” Richard said. “It’s nice to be in a position to help people who are in the position I was in 12 years when I started out. I really enjoy talking to young photographers – it’s just great to have the opportunity to be able to help people.”

Richard will revisit the College soon to look over the students’ work. The learners all said they enjoyed the talk and found it inspirational.

Amanda Coombes said: “You don’t see his motivation – you can feel it.”

Fellow first year FD Photography student Jessica Oliver added: “It was a very informative talk; Richard involved and engaged with us and he grabbed our interest. He was easy to empathise with and understand as he’d been in the same situation as us and was able to give good advice.

“It was motivational and inspirational. I think we were all left feeling better about our own work and our future in photography.”
