From education to employment

Students Taste Life In The Army At Sandhurst

Three outstanding students at Cambridge Regional College have been put through their paces in a gruelling two weeks at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, the world’s top officer training establishment.

Brothers Liam and Bradley York, 20,  and Jordan Cox, 19, the college’s first members of the Cambridge University Officers’ Training Corps and the only students on the course, passed the intensive two-week programme with flying colour.

The course is one of the essential modules required to qualify as army reserve officers, and the students, all studying on a higher education course in Uniformed Public Services at CRC, were the youngest in the group of 30 reservists.

During the demanding two weeks of 17-hour days, the trio had a real taste of life in the army, practising battlefield casualty drills, testing their navigation skills, pushing their fitness to the limit on the assault course and training in safe weapon handling.

“It was a very testing two weeks but it gave us a real feel for the army and we were very proud to have passed – particularly as we were the youngest people on the course,” said Jordan, who is hoping to join the army.

Lecturer Russ Power said he was immensely proud of the students.

“They were amazing and more than held their own amongst a much older group of army reservists at Sandhurst. The course is designed to develop leadership ability and key military skills and the students performed outstandingly. We are extremely proud of their achievement and hope others will follow their lead when they join the higher education course,” he said.
