South Yorkshire College Games

In April, students and staff from Doncaster College competed in netball, football and table tennis tournaments against rival colleges within the South Yorkshire area over two days. The games were hosted by Thomas Rotherham and Dearne Valley College.

The netball team put up a brave performance to come out on top, taking maximum points for Doncaster College. Table tennis doubles team, Jasmine Frost and Victoria Kelly, were only female pair in the competition and showed fantastic team spirit to finish runners up. Jasmine said “I really enjoyed the competitive nature of the tournament. I played some of the best players I have ever played before”.

As day 1 came to a close Doncaster College sat in second place behind Barnsley College.

Day 2 saw our men’s, women’s and SEND squads compete for the top spot in South Yorkshire. The girls had a physical contest finishing the tournament unbeaten; Shonia Robinson displayed her great eye for the goal, perfectly placing a few shots in the net. However, Sheffield College’s goal keeper made a number of outstanding saves in the final fixture to leave Doncaster College women’s team in 2^nd place on goal difference.

The SEND squad put on a great team performance, Lee Burland, Thomas Howe and Lisa Newell showed their technical skills to lead their team to 2^nd spot.  The men’s squad captained by Frankie Evans had a tough contest playing some well organised teams. The men’s team suffered only one loss overall, but a little more target practice is required as 3 games finished 0-0. Blaike Watkins, in goal for Doncaster, kept the opposition strikers at bay.

Overall a fantastic effort from all participants and huge congratulations as Doncaster College finished 3^rd overall. Participating in this regional event has been a great achievement and benchmarks next year’s South Yorkshire College Games. Thank you to all students and staff for representing the College across the competition without your enthusiasm this could not have been achieved!
