Cambridge Regional College student wins gold at Paralympics

GB paraclyclist Louis Rolfe powered his way to a new world record in Rio, winning gold in the team sprint with partners Jody Cullen and Jon-Allan Butterworth.

The 19 year-old Cambridge Regional College Sport Studies student led the team out in the sprint finals as the GB riders raced to success against defending champions China.

The outstanding trio, who also broke their own world record in the heats, gave ParalympicsGB their eighth gold medal in the Rio velodrome with their record-breaking performance and received a standing ovation from the crowd.

Earlier this year the team broke the world record and won gold in at the 2016 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships.

It was the second medal of the Games for Louis, who earlier claimed individual bronze in the men’s C2 3,000m individual pursuit.

The teenager, who has cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus after being born 10 weeks early, said he was delighted – and relieved – at the win.

“Winning gold is a very special feeling – but the overwhelming emotion is one of relief,” he said after the race.

He now has one more race in the Paralympics, competing in the road time-trial on Wednesday, 14 September.
