Cardiff and Vale College students get Creative in the City of the Unexpected
As tens of thousands of people of all ages came to Cardiff for a scrumdiddlyumptious weekend celebrating the centenary of Roald Dahl’s birth, Cardiff and Vale College’s extensive Creative Department was in the centre of the action.
Students and staff from every area of the College’s Creative Department took part in the celebrations from creating soundscapes to helping with the fantastic costumes of the performers.
Students designed and made the prizes for the Dahlian pic, including prizes for Most Revolting Picnic, Most Dahlian Picnic, Most Beautiful Picnic and Most Unexpected Picnic. They helped with the 2,000 dream jars, including dressing them into Bute Park and Music Technology learners created soundscapes to go with them.
The ‘explorers’ who were on the huge sled which was pulled through Cardiff were played by Performing Art students. Other Performing Art students took part in the live performance acting through the windows of St Mary’s Street and in live installations throughout the event all over the city.
Art students who had previously exhibited work inspired by Roald Dahl at St Fagans exhibited these pieces at special weekend event at Cardiff Museum. And, behind the scenes, Fashion students helped to dress the professional performers and assisted with costumes through the weekend as part of the wardrobe team while students from a range of course were involved in technical support.
Photography and Film learners were on hand to record events and Media students acted as bloggers, feeding into an online newspaper.
The students were all on hand to help make the City of the Unexpected a splendiferous, whiz-popping, swashboggling celebration.
CAVC Head of Creative Industries Kristen Harries said: “The creativity showcased at the City of the Unexpected was truly astounding. We must never underestimate the power of the creative arts – it holds no boundaries and highlights how creativity can help people progress themselves.
“The Creative Department at CAVC was honoured to have played a part in the event and for the learners to be involved in such a magical and inspirational production was a truly ‘unexpected’ experience for them all – I am extremely proud of the staff and the students who took part.”
