Swansea tidal lagoon hopes for NPTC Group of Colleges’ students

Engineering students from NPTC Group of Colleges’ Neath Campus believe they can benefit from the prospects of a £1.3bn tidal lagoon being built in nearby Swansea Bay.

James Llewellyn, a former NPTC Group of Colleges’ student and now a current Engineering lecturer, told BBC Wales’s economics correspondent, Sarah Dickins, that more students were putting themselves forward.

‘’The choice to study engineering is increasing as the majority of our engineering students go into well paid jobs – many in manufacturing, and with the prospect of more employment opportunities locally morale is high and the current students are excited!’’

Enhanced Level 2 Mechanical Engineering Student, Rhys Worlock, hopes for an apprenticeship, and said that the chance to work on big projects was an incentive.

‘’Engineering is becoming more and more popular because of what we are manufacturing today, we are making large structures, we are making skyscrapers – it’s only going to get bigger and bigger.’’

Wyn Prichard, Director of Construction Skills and Business Strategy at NPTC Group of Colleges added:

This is an exciting time for the College and Tidal lagoon. We are already building up skills for the sector and apprenticeships, as the lead FE College for the Wales Sustainability supply school and chairmanship of the Wales renewable energy skills Forum linked to UK Government policy group.

These initiatives along with a strong tradition of quality industry led provision provides the training solutions for Tidal Lagoon and other major infrastructure projects as they come forward
