From education to employment

Apprentices and employers celebrate success of construction course

Celebrations have been taking place at NPTC Group of Colleges’ Newtown Campus recently as engineering apprentices met with teaching staff and local employers to mark the success of one of the College’s new construction courses.

The event was co-hosted by NPTC Group of Colleges and CITB Wales to recognise a successful start to the course in Construction Contracting Operations and Civil Engineering.

Having started in September 2016 the two-year course began at the College’s Newtown Campus following discussions between the College, award-winning construction company Evabuild and CITB Wales.

Ian Lumsdaine, Director of Studies at NPTC Group of Colleges said: “There’s a huge skills shortage in the construction industry, but courses like this can help provide a solution.  Construction facilitates other sectors like health, education and commerce.  Without construction skills in place the activities in sectors like these would not happen which would have a detrimental effect on the economy.  So it’s essential that further training, like the type offered on this course, takes place.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved in setting up this course and especially the apprentices for deciding to help build the infrastructure that will support the community.”

Particular thanks were given to Gail Jones from Alun Griffiths. Other local employers involved in the apprentice scheme include; S.J. Roberts (Marton); Alun Griffiths; D.J. Bright (Knighton); Par Homes (Llandrindod); G.R. Morris Contractors Ltd (Builth) and Evel Build (Newtown).
