As the countdown for the Cardiff Bay Run reaches just eight weeks, Cardiff and Vale College (CAVC) has today [Thursday 2nd February] been announced as new title sponsor.

Previously known as the Cardiff Bay 5 Mile, a stunning new 10km route around Cardiff Bay has today also been revealed for the event which is now officially titled the Cardiff and Vale College Cardiff Bay Run.

Starting in the heart of Cardiff Bay, the route passes the iconic Wales Millennium Centre, Pierhead Building, Senedd and Porth Teigr, loops around the Cardiff Bay Barrage and passes the Norwegian Church before a grandstand finish in the Roald Dahl Plass. A 2km Family Fun Run will kick off the day’s proceedings – allowing runners of all ages and abilities to take part.

Mike James, Chief Executive of the Cardiff and Vale College Group, said:

“We’re delighted to support Run 4 Wales in bringing this exciting event to the region. As the largest College in the Cardiff Capital Region we have over 30,000 young people and adults from across Cardiff, the Vale and beyond learning with us each year. Sport, health and wellbeing are increasingly important themes for us. Last year we moved our home for CAVC Sport to Cardiff International Sports Campus [formerly stadium], in Leckwith. We share this facility with partners including House of Sport and bodies such as Welsh Athletics. This sees our staff and students learning in the same place that professional athletes and sportspeople are training.

“Each year we have hundreds of students learning, gaining qualifications and developing their careers in all aspects of sport. Through our popular sports academies, we also ensure our students have access to the best sports facilities, coaching and opportunities to develop their passions and sometimes careers as professional sports people, alongside studying for A Levels or career focused courses. We also encourage all staff and students to participate in sport or activities that can support their wellbeing

“The exciting new event is a wonderful opportunity for us to support our community – with many of our students and staff running or gaining a brilliant experience from volunteering on the day.”

Matt Newman, Chief Executive of race organisers Run 4 Wales, commented:

“We are delighted to be partnering with Cardiff and Vale College on the Cardiff Bay Run and look forward to delivering a fantastic event in two months’ time. The new partnership will provide an exciting range of opportunities for both students and staff to get involved and allows us to extend our reach to a new audience of participants, spectators and volunteers.

The decision to introduce a new 10km route, replacing the old 5-mile course has proven extremely popular. We’ve been blown away by the interest in the race – from elite and club athletes looking for a fast time right through to beginners looking to improve their fitness or raise money for charity”.

As well as a large number of staff and students from Cardiff and Vale College, a sea of yellow ‘Team CF’ runners representing Official Charity Partner the Cystic Fibrosis Trust will be out in force on race-day, running to make a difference for thousands of people with Cystic Fibrosis in the UK, their families and carers.

Those looking to take part in the Cardiff & Vale College Cardiff Bay Run are being urged to get their entry in before it’s too late, with nearly 4000 runners already signed up. Registration is expected to close next month, when the race reaches its capacity.

Entry starts from just £19 and includes a medal and technical race t-shirt for every finisher. You can sign up at www.cardiffbayrun.co.uk. The event is organised by Run 4 Wales, the delivery team behind the Cardiff University/Cardiff Half Marathon and takes place on Sunday 2nd April 2017.
