Apprentices compete at Sparks Electrical Apprentice of the Year 2017

Well done to electrical apprentices from SERC who took part in Northern Ireland’s first regional heat for the SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year 2017 which took place at Northern Regional College.

Launched in 2010, the SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year competitions gives participants the chance to be recognised for their hard work and skills. It’s a great opportunity for lecturers, employers, industry leaders and manufacturers to get involved and support the next generation of electricians.

Apprentices George Smyth and Matthew McQuoid from Downpatrick, Adam Carter, and Andrew Tucker from Newtownards and Ross and Peter Thompson from Lisburn were put forward for the Competition by their lecturers and were up against some of the top apprentices from across the province.

The competition is organised every year by SPARKS Magazine for level 2 or 3 students.

John Nixon SERC head of school for construction and engineering services said: ““Students get a lot out of competitions. They make new friends, gain confidence in their abilities and enjoy the challenge of the competition.

“It also provides a unique stage for trainees to showcase their skills and expertise and motivates them to reach the highest standards in trade careers. Well done to all the students who took part.”

Alongside the top award, the competition offered an impressive list of prizes worth over £8000 sponsored by some of the industry’s leading organisations.
