Cardiff and Vale College students Faye Lobeck has won bronze in the Skills Competition Wales Nail Technology category.

The Level 2 Beauty and Nail Services student’s achievement is all the more impressive as Faye was competing against Level 3 students from across the region. Several students from CAVC took part in the competition which was held at Coleg Cambria in Deeside.

The contest, which feeds into the wider WorldSkills UK competition, involved students, trainees and apprentices having three hours in which to apply a full set of nail acrylic – one hand painted with nail art and one French polished.

“I wasn’t nervous because I didn’t have any high expectations,” Faye, who is 27 and from Barry, said. “I’ve been involved with competitions in the past – I just wanted to make sure I completed the task.

“So I was shocked, really shocked, to come third and win bronze. I wasn’t expecting it at all – I struggled a bit during the competition and I thought I hadn’t done the best nails that I could do.”

Hayley Parsons-Jones, Retail and Business Development Manager at CAVC’s urbasba salon, said: “We are proud of all of the CAVC students who competed on the day and the standard was extremely high. They represented the College incredibly well and our thanks go out to them.”

Skills Competition Wales is a Welsh Government-backed series of events designed to showcase vocational skills and create a highly skilled future Welsh workforce.
