College Hub Becomes Dragon’s Den!

On Wednesday 5th April, Doncaster College students brought Dragon’s Den to the Hub as we saw the finale of the annual Student Enterprise Competition.

14 Student teams from all over our course areas pitched their products and services created for our ‘Make It Happen!’ event in the hope to WOW judges and win cash prizes kindly donated by our sponsors. The judges were amazed by all the creative ideas, but it was team ‘Power Up’ from Level 3 Electrical Engineering with their phone-charging locker who stole the show, bagging themselves 2 awards including the overall win and £300.

Students set up their stands allowing staff and judges to browse, giving golden tickets to finalists entering the next round. Finalists then presented ideas to an audience. Judges Catherine Parkinson from Doncaster College, Andy Clow from The Youth Association and Catherine Jones from Smith Kraven then chose the winners of all 6 awards.  Behind team Power Up, we had 3 teams who were awarded the remaining 4 awards and £100 for each one. Sponsors Hair and Beauty Co, Forward and Thinking, Campus Coffee and Dixon Timber Products we’re invited to the finale.

Breakfast Drinks, reusable travel Bags, child tracking bracelets, lock pocket towels & therapeutic bakeries for mental health are just some of the creative products and services invented by our students.

“The best part was seeing our end product come together.  To know it all started as an idea on a piece of paper is crazy”, said students from Level 3 Business. Travel and tourism students said “We’ve learnt business skills outside of our course. It’s great to try something new and exciting”.

The volume of student applications this year shot up, making it a real struggle to narrow down to just 14 teams, 6 from Travel & Tourism, 2 from Business and 1 from Film & TV, Professional Cookery, Health & Social, Horse Care, Engineering and Life Skills.
