Cardiff and Vale College has launched a brand new transition and review team for learners with Additional Learning Needs (ALN).

The team is the first of its kind in a mainstream Further Education (FE) college. The Welsh Government is legislating on ALN and a change in the law is due that will aim to improve outcomes for learners with additional learning needs. Transition from school into college plus preparing for adulthood are fundamental elements of the drive to ensure positive success for students with ALN.

Cardiff and Vale College has appointed Emily Morris and Helen Williams into new roles on the ALN Transition Team. The team will help learners make the move into college by offering tours, attending annual reviews in schools, supporting teaching and learning using people centred approaches and carrying out statutory annual reviews.

By working with parents and carers and the College’s professional partners, CAVC is committing to working towards the aims and objectives of the new proposed legislation and increasing links with both the local community and young people with ALN.

CAVC Additional Learning Needs Co-ordinator James Donaldson said: “We have been working closely with schools, Careers Wales, young people and their parents or carers to create this service. We know that by investing in transition, learners will have a smoother journey both into and out of college.

“We will continue to work with the Welsh Government on the new legislation and have recently been working with other sector leads on a number of transition elements.”
