From education to employment

FREE SEMINAR FOR BUSINESSES ON THE NEW APPRENTICESHIP LEVY

Employers keen to find out about the impact of the Government’s new Apprenticeship Levy, can attend a free one hour seminar hosted by the Department of Higher Education, Construction Design & Management at Leeds College of Building on Monday 15th May 2017.

Brian Duffy from Leeds College of Building, which currently train 1,500 Apprentices, says: “The Apprenticeship Levy was introduced on 6 April 2017 and it requires all employers operating in the UK, with a wage bill over £3 million each year, to invest in apprenticeships. Employers will now be classified as non-levy or levy payers.

“The seminar will cover technician and professional Apprenticeships and is relevant for both non-levy and levy payers. It will provide employers with an overview of the key changes to Apprenticeships and how they will affect their business. Other areas covered will include how to use the Apprenticeship Service, what the new standards and frameworks are, how to progress from level 3 to level 6 Apprenticeships and how Leeds College of Building can support businesses through the changes.

Brian adds: “Every employer needs to be aware of the changes to Apprenticeships. Over the next decade the UK needs millions of new technical and professional skilled workers and the Government has identified Apprenticeships as being key to this. It’s estimated that 3 million new Apprenticeship starts are required by 2020 and this levy is specifically designed to support this.

“We are heavily involved in the development of the new Apprenticeship standards and we work alongside key industry bodies and employers to develop new Apprenticeships in a huge range of areas, including civil engineering and transport planning. We are currently working with over 500 employers to deliver Apprenticeships, and our achievement rates exceed 85%, putting us amongst the top providers in the UK.”

The College offers numerous technical and professional Apprenticeship routes such as surveying, transport planning, architectural technology, building services and civil engineering together with two Higher Level Apprenticeships in Construction Management (Sustainability) and Facilities Management which offer university equivalent work based education.
