From education to employment

Wigan & Leigh College is awarded University Centre status

Skills and employment futures in the Wigan borough are set to advance with the awarding of University Centre status to Wigan & Leigh College which is also celebrating 70 years of delivering higher education this year.

The College’s expert tutors deliver the programmes and support undergraduates in achieving their degree qualifications which are awarded by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). This gives the local community the opportunity to get a degree from one of the top 4% of all universities in the world and gain real-world experience through close employer links.

Tim Steele, Executive Director of International Strategy and Partnerships at UCLan, said: “The University of Central Lancashire is delighted to continue our collaboration with Wigan and Leigh College through the development of the new University Centre, to provide students with the opportunity to obtain a Higher Education Award from UCLan locally.”

With 13 existing graduate career pathways, including specialist Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects, and a sector leading Degree Apprenticeship programme with Sellafield Ltd, the opportunities will expand and develop to support Wigan’s ambitions for economic growth.

Donna Hall, chief executive of Wigan Council, said: “This is fantastic news for the existing and future workforce in the borough. The college’s role in supporting businesses through skills development is crucial to our economic vision.”

The University Centre at Wigan & Leigh College also makes degree level study realistic for adult students with flexible study options around life and work commitments. A large number of our HE students have full-time jobs or their own businesses and can develop at their own pace.

College Principal Anna Dawe said: “We are immensely proud to have received the acknowledgement of our status as a quality Higher Education provider. In addition this secures the futures of our students and the local business community.”

The University Centre will be welcoming VIP guests, businesses and potential students to a University Centre community open event on Tuesday 20th June 5pm-8pm.
