College tutor gets top accolade for ‘STEM’ teaching

A tutor has been awarded for her expertise in teaching science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The North of England winners of the ENTHUSE Celebration Awards were announced at a high-profile awards evening at Manchester Town Hall.

The Awards event celebrated the impact of professional development on teachers, technicians, schools and colleges in the crucial areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Winnstanley College’s Head of Biology, Jenni Burgess Thomas and colleagues were in the packed audience at the Manchester Town Hall when it was announced that Jenni had won the ENTHUSE award for excellence in STEM teaching.

Jenni gained first place for her innovative and creative input into STEM subjects. Activities included initiatives such as ‘Biology Week’, which involved hundreds of local school children visiting the College to experience what opportunities a career in science could bring.

Jenni said: “I’m overjoyed to have won this award. The STEM activities on offer in College are ever-growing and we have a fantastic bunch of students who love getting involved.

“I’m really excited to be going to the national finals which will be hosted in London at The House of Commons.”
