MIDDLESBROUGH COLLEGE’S A Level results have moved into the top 25% of colleges in the country.

This is in addition to the ongoing success of the vocational and higher education provision which have both moved into the top 10% of the country this year.

Scores of students opened their results this morning – showing a 99% overall pass rate.

For a fourth consecutive year the college has improved its results and this year a record number of 22 subject areas achieved 100% pass rates.

Those academic subjects included Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, English Language, English Literature, History and Geography.

Crucially the college has moved into the top 25% of colleges in the country for A Level student progress – that means learners showed more progress from their starting points than ever before with 73% achieving high grades.

What’s more the brilliant results come in the first year of the new “linear” A Levels – that means students across 13 of the college’s 24 subject areas sit their exams at the end of the second year, rather than each year.

BTEC students are also celebrating as the College reports a 28% increase in high grades, meaning that 68% of BTEC students have a distinction profile this year, taking vocational progress into the top 10% nationally.

Zoe Lewis, principal and chief executive at Middlesbrough College, was on hand to see students collect their results.

She said: “It’s a fantastic testament to the hard work and commitment of Middlesbrough College’s staff and students that have moved us into the top 25% of colleges in the country.

“This year we have 1,122 students who have applied to university and 96% of all learners have gone on to a positive destination – that might be employment, further and higher education and apprenticeships.

“I’m thrilled for our A Level and BTEC students who have put in a great deal of hard work this year, and for our tutors who have supported them with their studies throughout the year.”

The results follow Middlesbrough College’s award of a gold standard in the Teaching Excellence Framework awards (TEF) – a rigorous national review of how universities and colleges are performing.

Middlesbrough was the only general further education college or University in the Tees Valley to achieve the gold standard.

Key features highlighted by the awards were; high quality teaching and learning, excellent progression into employment and outstanding physical and digital resources.
