Cardiff and Vale College A Level student Diego Cotera has raised more than £300 for victims of the recent earthquake in Mexico by organising a special Dia de los Meurtos – ‘Day of the Dead’ – celebration at the College.

Departments and students from across the College joined forces to help 18-year-old Diego, who lives in Cardiff but is originally from Mexico. The College’s International Department supported the event.

Theatrical Makeup students provided special Dia de los Meurtos face painting, while Bakery learners produced traditional Mexican bread – pan de meurtos – plus Day of the Dead themed biscuits and hot chocolate for sale. English for International Students helped with collecting donations and there was an arts and crafts sale.

Beauty students carried out nail painting with a Day of the Dead theme and there was a special showing of the film Book of Life in the College’s Theatr Michael Sheen where ticket price included nachos and soft drinks.

More than £300 was raised from CAVC staff and students, which will go to the Mexican Earthquake Appeal.

“I wanted to raise money and my parents encouraged me to think about a Day of the Dead event to raise funds for people affected by the earthquake that recently happened in Mexico,” Diego explained. “I spoke to the International Department and they helped – I didn’t ever think it would be as big as this – it’s wonderful, they provided so much support and were always helping out with ideas. I would like to thank everyone who helped and took part.”
