‘Slam dunk’ for female basketball team

The women’s basketball team at Tameside College have qualified for the AoC national championships after beating tough competition from other colleges.

Students, from across various college departments, will represent the north-west in the national finals 2018 in Nottingham after finishing first in the qualifying championships.

The team defeated rivals Xaverian College, Blackpool Sixth Form College, Aquinas College and Holy Cross College to qualify at the National Badminton Performance Centre in Belle Vue, Manchester.

This is the first time the team has competed after being formed by college basketball coach, Natalie Cromer, who currently plays for the Manchester Mystics basketball squad.

Luke Podmore, sports development officer at Tameside College, said: “This was a fantastic day for Tameside College. We have done a lot of work in driving opportunities for females at the college. With the expertise of Natalie, It’s allowed us to showcase the talent that we have here. I’m made up for the players and can’t wait to give the students the experience of the AoC national championships. I will be ensuring that we continue to hone our enrichment experience to give as many students as possible this platform to represent the college.”
