Breakfast Club Inspiration for @DerbyCollege Leaders

Senior leaders at Derby College have visited Firs Estate Primary School in Raven Street to see the benefits of the new phase of the city’s Breakfast Club programme.

The scheme, to offer funded breakfast’s through local business to children across Derby city schools, is a collaborative project between Derby City Council, leading City entrepreneur Kavita Oberoi OBE, Aaron Thalman, Mike and Dana Copestake, Derby County Football Community Trust and HIS Church.

This year Derby College have named the Breakfast Club as their charity of the year and are setting 4000 students the task of raising £15 each which is the cost of feeding one child for a year.

April Hayhurst, Derby College Deputy Principal – Employer and Economic Affairs, said: “Our senior team thoroughly enjoyed seeing one of the Breakfast Clubs in action and how the pupils were well fed and raring to go for the day’s lessons and activities.

“They are now spreading the word across the College about our ambition is to raise £50,000 over the coming years and support our students with their enterprise and entrepreneurial skills to devise a wide range of fund raising initiatives.”

All the College campuses in Derby and Erewash have a fund raising programme planned which ranges from open days to carrying out practical work in businesses in return for donations.

Firs Estate Headteacher Paula Martin added: “We are really pleased with the impact the Breakfast Club is having on many aspects of the children’s learning at Firs.

“The children are starting their learning in a much more positive frame of mind. This is because they have chance to socialise with their friends and adults while eating their breakfast, giving them a very settled start to the day.

“The Breakfast Club is also starting to improve attendance and has definitely improved punctuality, both of which are a huge focus for the school.

“We currently give breakfast to between 75-80 children every day. Children love it, parents love it and staff love it. It has been such a positive initiative at Firs and one which we are sure will continue to grow and help improve educational outcomes for our children.”
