Uxbridge College and Brunel students join forces for Good Deeds Day

A total of 125 students from Brunel University London and Uxbridge College joined forces to help out local people in Uxbridge as part of annual Good Deeds Day 2018.

The event was launched by the Mayor of Hillingdon Cllr Carol Melvin and her Consort Andrew, with other guests including Brunel’s Deputy Vice Chancellor Bill Leahy. All three were among visitors to The Pavilions who had free manicures provided by Uxbridge College’s Beauty Therapy students!

Activities on the day, which centred around The Pavilions shopping centre in Uxbridge, also included:

  • free tea, coffee and cakes,
  • craft activities,
  • children’s board games,
  • Digi Drop in at Uxbridge and Yiewsley libraries,
  • volunteering at Thames Valley Hospice and Oxfam charity shops,
  • serving lunch at Christchurch Cafe,
  • Tea Dance at West Drayton & Yiewsley Community centre,
  • bag packing in local supermarkets and
  • litter picking in the town centre.

Crowds of shoppers were entertained by the good deeds and the vibrant and energetic dance displays provided by Uxbridge College’s performing arts students, and fitness challenges set by the Brunel Burners American Football Team.

Public Services students from Uxbridge College also took part in litter picking.

Armani Campbell, Student Support Officer – Citizenship and Volunteering Activities at Uxbridge College, said:

“This annual event is a fantastic opportunity for students to give something back to their community, and to showcase their skills and act as ambassadors for the college. A big thank you to Brunel University London, The Pavilions Uxbridge, Uxbridge Forward and INTU Uxbridge for making this event such a success.”

The theme for this year was ’Do something special for your Valentine’ and shoppers at The Pavilions shopping centre were encouraged to leave a special message for their Valentine. Three lucky ‘hearts’ were chosen at random to receive gifts of flowers and chocolates.

The event raised money for the Mayor of Hillingdon’s Charitable Trust, which supports The Lynda Jackson MacMillan Centre at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, The Halo Foundation a bereavement support organisation for children and young people, and The 1st Northwood Scout Group.
