Cardiff and Vale College students come third in UK-wide film competition

A group of students from Cardiff and Vale College have come third in a UK-wide film competition.

The ten Foundation Degree in Film learners came third in the National Association for Managers of Student Services’ annual Film Competition. Now in its second year, the NAMSS Film Awards were celebrated at a ceremony in Birmingham.

Students were briefed to produce a short film to reflect a young person’s view on why voting is important. Alexander Jones, Anna Shaw, Catherine Proctor, Dylan Lewis, Harrison Ellis, Haydn Wakeling and Sean Davies won high street vouchers for £500 while CAVC was awarded £500 for equipment.

Thirty-two-year-old Sean Davies from Barry collected the award on behalf of his fellow students.

“It’s a great result as it’s a national award, not just a Wales based competition,” he said. “We only had two days to get the film done so to come third was quite an achievement as some of the other competitors had longer to prepare.

“There were ten of us working on the film and everyone played their part. The film was about the importance of voting and whether 16 to 18-year-olds should have the right vote which is quite topical at the moment; especially in Wales.

“Winning this competition is helpful – sometimes doing things like this gives you a bit of extra motivation to go on and do other things that will help you in your course.”
