Cardiff and Vale College’s Kyra Jones selected for Team Wales at the Commonwealth Games

Cardiff and Vale College’s Head of Netball, Kyra Jones, has been selected to represent Wales at the Commonwealth Games.

Kyra, who has played for Wales in the Netball World Cup and previous Commonwealth Games, has been selected for the Welsh Netball squad for the 2018 Games in Gold Coast, Australia. She is head of the College’s Netball Academy, where 16 to 18-year-olds can study for A Levels or vocational qualifications while training to be the netball stars of the future.

Playing against the likes of New Zealand, England and Scotland, Kyra will gain valuable experience both on and off the court that will benefit the CAVC Netball Academy students when she returns.

Kyra said: “I aim to gain more experience and knowledge to be able to bring that back to my role as Head of Netball at CAVC. To be able to teach what I have learned to the Academy girls.

“It is also a great opportunity to experience different sports other than netball and see what it is they do – I am privileged to have the opportunity to mingle with great sporting athletes and understand how they train. It will be a great opportunity to live in the Athlete’s Village and continue to learn and grow; not only individually but as a team.”

Kyra will also be encouraging the CAVC Netball Academy players to watch the games.

“It will be a great opportunity for the girls to sit down and watch the games,” she explained. “It will show them what it takes to be able to play for your country.

“You can learn a lot from watching a netball game – you can use it look back at your own game and identify what it is you want to improve upon. Then you can take that back to the training court and start putting that into practice.”

Open to all students, CAVC sporting academies provide a supportive and specialist environment that combines first-class coaching and sports development with the College’s expanding portfolio of courses.
