Medals All Round for Catering Students

Students on the catering course at Newtown College proved they can take the heat in the kitchen, after winning Silver and Bronze medals at the annual Welsh International Culinary Championship in Coleg Llandrillo.

Alice Yeoman, 18 years old from Borth and Katie Sinclair, 19 years old from Newtown were both awarded Silver medals in the Welsh International Culinary Championships, designed to celebrate the nation’s culinary skills and rich variety of quality food.

Katie was given the Silver award for competing in the Ultimate Cupcakes competition, while Alice received an overall Silver award in Advanced Culinary as part of the Skills Competition Wales and was awarded two further Silver and Bronze awards by judges in recognition of her outstanding achievements on the day.

Twenty-one year old Stephanie Williams from Llanidloes also enjoyed success on the day, and was awarded the Bronze medal in categories for the Welsh Lamb Main Course and Major Chicken Challenge.

Alice has now entered into the World Skills UK Advanced Culinary Competition and says she enjoys taking part in the competitions and is looking forward to the next stage in Cardiff in June 2018.

Lecturer Shaun Bailey, who had worked with the girls to prepare them for the competition said he was pleased everything had come together on the day, adding: ‘The girls had worked hard to improve their efficiency in order to make sure that they worked well to produce a good standard in the time they are allocated.’ Shaun has a wealth of experience in culinary competition and has previously been a judge for the Welsh International Culinary Championship.

Lecturer Mandy Carter who accompanied the girls to the event said she was ‘very proud of the results the girls had achieved.’
