From education to employment

Sheffield College Lecturer Shortlisted For Oscars Style Catering Award

A Sheffield College catering lecturer has been selected as a finalist for a prestigious national industry award.

Len Unwin has been shortlisted in the Chef Lecturer category of the Craft Guild of Chefs Awards 2018. The awards recognise emerging and established talent including key figures in the UK chef industry.

Len said: “It’s an honour to have been shortlisted for the equivalent of the Oscars for the catering industry. I’m also really proud of our students and what they achieve.”

He added: “It’s a privilege to mentor them and work with top chefs in the industry who are committed to supporting the next generation of talent. Our students have a fantastic work ethic as well as a competitive edge and the vocational skills that employers need.”

During the last 17 years, Len has taught, inspired and mentored many trainee chefs including repeatedly going the extra mile to help them train and prepare for national competitions.

As a result, the College has a string of award wins to its name. This includes winning the National Junior Chef four times and Young Restaurant Team of the Year three times, and many more. Len has also won competitions in his own right.

Angela Foulkes, Principal and Acting Chief Executive, The Sheffield College, said: “This is fantastic recognition of our catering team who have an excellent reputation for supporting our students so they get the industry skills to succeed in employment. I want to congratulate Len on this success, which is well deserved.”

The winners will be announced at an awards dinner at the Grosvenor Hotel in London on June 4th. Now in its 25th year, the awards dinner attracts around 800 professionals and leading lights from the catering industry. Visit
