Frighteningly good work on display at the Hair Show

Hair and beauty students based in the ‘enhance’ salon at London South East Colleges’ Bromley Campus put their technical and creative skills into action this week and produced a show full of stunning creativity, colour and imagination as they competed for prizes at the College’s annual Hair Show. This year, the themes were horror for level 2 students and international culture and tradition for the level 3s.

The students worked tirelessly throughout the morning to perfect their hair designs and beauty makeup effects on their chosen models. The salon was a hive of activity as they awaited the arrival of industry expert James Galvin, Style Director at Daniel Galvin Salons, specialists in providing world class, bespoke hairdressing, colouring and styling at four high-end central London locations. He came along to judge the competitions and offer advice and support to students on a range of different competences.

In a showcase of the bizarre, the unusual, the glamorous and the avant garde, students paraded their models in front of the judges in what was an incredible and highly exciting spectacle. Over thirty models, formed a colourful and glittering procession to show off the students’ work.

James Galvin said: “I was delighted to be asked to judge the competition today. I saw some fabulous work and very high standards. The students were clearly highly motivated and the talent very evident in the work on display. I got the impression that each and every student was hungry for success and dedicated to achieving great results. I’d like to say well done to everyone and a big congratulations to the winners of each category.”

London South East Colleges tutor, Lisa McKellow, said: “Today was all about the very glamorous side of this industry and a chance for the students to really get creative. Their final presentation had to demonstrate the mood boards they devised, the standard of the hair and makeup, the accessories, clothes and footwear – so much to get right.

“It’s been a very busy and colourful week in the salon. I have seen just how committed and keen our students can be and I’m proud that they have all taken their industry projects very seriously. Impressing employers is very important and I think we have put on a great show for our guests. Congratulations to our overall winners, Katie, Valmira and Bibanna, for the level 2 competition, and Donika, Janice, Christiana and Nagres for level 3.”

First prize winner at level 2, Katie Brice said: “I have enjoyed this immensely. I’ve had to push myself to learn new tricks and techniques in order to achieve these results today”.

Joint first prize winner at level 3, Janice Turner said: “I’m really proud to be chosen as one of the winners in this competition. All of us had to work under great pressure and within a very tight timeframe. I’m so pleased with the look I created and the costume that I designed and made myself.”
