All female team represent the region
Eight students from Tameside College represented further education colleges from the north west of England in the Association of Colleges (AoC) National Championships last month.
The women’s basketball team for the region was made up entirely of Tameside College students with further representation in the badminton team.
The basketball team won two out of the four games played in the competition against the Midlands and Yorkshire and Humberside. Meanwhile the north west badminton team managed to finish in fourth place overall after beating tough opposition.
Students from a variety of college departments took part in the championships, including: sport, public services, carpentry and joinery and English for speakers of other languages.
The north-west region came in 3rd place overall this year, behind the south-west and south-east teams, claiming 161 points.
This year the AoC National Championships was hosted at the University of Nottingham’s David Ross Sports Village. The annual competition, which brings together over 1700 students from across the UK and ten regions to compete, is comprised of those who have qualified for their region’s team in the qualifying stages.
Luke Podmore, sports development lead at Tameside College, said: “It has been an amazing weekend for everyone involved. The fact that we had eight students compete is a testament to the talented and driven students we have at Tameside College and the commitment that they have put in. I am proud of all their efforts and hope their involvement in the AoC National Championships this year will inspire more of our students to strive to reach this level. The enrichment programme we have at the college allows learners at all levels to participate in the sport they love and take it much further.”
The students who took part in the competition were: Sarah Parker, Chloe Dunn, Rebekah Turner, Caitlin Power-Tarbatt, Sophie Latchford, Rachel Balshaw, Fatima Balde Binta and Love Gaye all.
